(1063) Evaluating the Impact of an Educational Intervention on Pharmacists Confidence with Counseling on Continuous Glucose Monitor Use and Prescribing

Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate if community-based pharmacists are more comfortable and confident with counseling on how to use continuous glucose monitors after completing an educational intervention. The secondary objective of this study is to evaluate the change in quantity of continuous glucose monitors being prescribed before and after the educational intervention. The incidence of diagnosis of diabetes mellitus has been growing steadily over twenty years. Although using a blood glucose monitor has been the standard of care to monitor patients’ blood sugars, more patients are starting to use continuous glucose monitors as they are easier to use and have shown benefits such as reducing the incidence of hospitalizations due to hypoglycemia. Due to increased numbers of patients using continuous glucose monitors now, it’s important for healthcare professionals like pharmacists to know how they work, how to apply them properly, what benefits they offer and how they differ between multiple brands.

Methods: This project is a prospective study as community-based pharmacists will take a pre-assessment to evaluate their baseline knowledge, review an educational intervention, then take a post-assessment. This will be done by sending a Qualtrics survey via electronically to eligible pharmacists with an invitation to participate in the study. Participation is voluntary and surveys are completed anonymously. The educational intervention will explain the differences between continuous glucose monitors with blood glucose monitors, how to set up and apply a continuous glucose monitor and explain what benefits it provides to patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Inclusion criteria includes community-based pharmacists that are permitted to prescribe a continuous glucose monitor which currently includes pharmacists in Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon. Exclusion criteria includes other pharmacy employees such as pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns. Comparing the pre- and post-assessment will be evaluated using a chi-square test. Additionally, comparing the change in quantity of continuous glucose monitors being prescribed before and after the educational intervention will be evaluated using descriptive analysis.
