The United States is currently experiencing widespread workforce challenges in healthcare and the pharmacy profession is not immune to these pressures. These challenges are magnified in the federal sector due to ridged laws, regulations and policies that do not apply to the more nimble private sector. This session will describe and discuss some of the strategies that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has taken to try to address these challenges. The session will share ideas and approaches to support the hiring and retention of the pharmacist and pharmacy technician workforce. The presentation will touch on demographics, and cultural and equity issues. The session will conclude with the opportunity for audience interaction via Q&A.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the demographics of the pharmacist workforce and the current pharmacist workforce challenges on the practice of pharmacy
  • Discuss 3 ways that the VA has tried to address these pharmacist recruitment and retention challenges
  • Explain limitations to what can be done to improve recruitment and retention of pharmacists in the VA system without changes in legislation
  • Describe successes to date with VA’s assessment and implementation of pharmacist recruitment and retention strategies
