(1232) Patient Perceptions on Clinical Pharmacist Intervention at a Federally Qualified Health Center’s Suboxone Clinic

Objectives: This study primarily seeks to evaluate patient perceptions of pharmacist interventions before and after a follow-up telephone encounter with a pharmacist during their Suboxone treatment course. The secondary objective of this study will be to assess trends in barriers-to-care in patients with opioid use disorder, and patient perceptions of what may reduce these barriers.

Methods: This is a pre/post-intervention study at the KC CARE Health Center, a federally qualified health center in Kansas City, MO. Between October 2023 and February 2024, any patient with opioid use disorder who is started on Suboxone will be included in the study. Patients will be given an initial survey to collect demographic information, a brief history of their opioid use disorder, and whether the patient feels they would benefit from a 2-week check-in encounter from a pharmacist. Approximately 14 days after their initial clinic visit, all patients who complete the initial survey will be contacted by a pharmacist. This telephone encounter will address patient concerns, medication adherence, side effects, and substance use relapse. After the telephone encounter, the patient will be asked to rank their satisfaction regarding the benefit of the encounter, and to indicate what other interventions they believe may be beneficial to them. The contents of the conversation will be recorded, and the patient’s concerns will be addressed by the pharmacist or referred to the clinic provider. Patient responses will be analyzed for emerging themes. Patient demographics will be assessed using descriptive statistics. Perceptions of benefit from pharmacist intervention in the pre and post surveys will be assessed using chi-square, to see if there is an increase in patient perceived benefit of pharmacist involvement after the interventions have been made.
