Betty J. Dong, PharmD, FCSHP, FASHP, FCCP, FAPHA, AAHIVP, is Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of California Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. She received her PharmD from UCSF in 1972 and then completed a clinical pharmacy residency at UCSF in 1973. Betty also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
Since 1990 she has served as a clinician for the Clinicians' Consultation Center (CCC), a national telephone consulting service funded by the CDC and HRSA for HIV management, including pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis, for HBV, and HCV infection in adults, children, and during pregnancy.
Betty’s clinical practice, primarily located at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, functions under the auspices of a collaborative prescribing protocol. These sites include the Family HIV/HCV clinic to manage HIV and HCV infection, and a Pharmacy Care clinic for referral of difficult-to-manage patients with chronic diseases, including hypertension, anticoagulation, diabetes, and medication non-adherence. She provides HCV education and management for those receiving chronic HCV treatment. Previously, she had also provided clinical care for patients with thyroid illness at the UCSF thyroid clinic and also served as the clinical pharmacist on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service for several years before the transition to the ambulatory care clinics.
Betty has extensively published research and has been invited to provide presentations in the aforementioned areas. Her research in the area of thyroxine bioequivalence led to significant changes in this area. Among her honors, she has received several awards, including teaching awards, the ACCP Clinical Practice Award, CSHP Pharmacist of the Year Award, APHA Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award and designated Fellow for all the major pharmacy organizations.
