States have adopted various strategies to expand pharmacist scope of practice, which increases access to services and allows pharmacists to practice at the top of their training. APhA receives many questions from pharmacists around legislative changes and current opportunities regarding scope of practice within their states and how it compares to other states. Also, some pharmacists may not be aware of best practices for gathering and presenting data to advocate for expanded scope of practice to legislative bodies. To influence legislation, pharmacists should be aware of the processes for implementing laws that allow for expanded pharmacist scope of practice.

  • Define collaborative practice agreements, statewide protocols, and standing orders and recognize how they vary between states
  • Identify best practices to advocate for legislation that expands pharmacist scope of practice
