Currently, 41 states and territories have provisions allowing for some sort of charitable drug donation or drug repository program. This is up from 36 states and territories in 2015. There is significant variety in both the scope and regulation of these programs, but generally they provide an opportunity to dispose of excess unexpired, unopened drugs in a manner that is both cost-effective and environmentally conscious. Attend this session to learn from a subject matter expert who has redistributed enough medication for over 1,600,000 prescriptions worth more than $180 million and a charitable pharmacist currently providing donated medications to her patients.

  • Discuss the regulatory landscape of charitable drug donation programs.  
  • Identify requirements for licensing and operational compliance for drug donors and beneficiaries.  
  • Compare how drug repository programs are implemented in a variety of states. 
  • Examine barriers to implementing a drug-repository program and strategies to overcome those barriers.
