Any social system can either support or interfere with fundamental emotional and psychological health. This session will examine what humans need for emotional and psychological health and the harmful effects on pharmacists, technicians and patients when fundamental human needs are not met in the workplace. Objectification, chronic stress, shame, burnout and anger will be explored. In particular how unhealthy work environments trigger patient anger and aggression will be addressed along with how to respond to it.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe fundamental human needs for emotional and psychological health
  • Examine what happens when fundamental human needs are not met in the workplace
  • Describe the relationship between objectification and anger and abuse
  • Explore the origins of anger in both pharmacists and patients
  • Apply learnings to a patient case scenario that requires de-escalation
