(1140) Does Performing a Comprehensive Vaccine Review During Appointment-based Vaccine Visits Increase the Percentage of Eligible Vaccines Administered in a Community Pharmacy Setting?

Objectives: Community pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers to the public and therefore play an important role in increasing vaccination rates. According to a report from the Global Healthy Living Foundation and the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, pharmacists administered more routine vaccinations than physicians during 2020 and 2021. In addition to being the most accessible healthcare providers, community pharmacists also increase vaccination rates by providing education and making strong recommendations during targeted interventions. However, despite their efficacy and low risk of adverse events, vaccination administration rates remain lower than Healthy People 2023 goals for most vaccines. The primary objective of this study is to determine if performing comprehensive vaccine reviews during appointment-based vaccine visits increase the percentage of eligible vaccines administered in a community pharmacy setting. Secondary objectives are to determine if performing comprehensive vaccine reviews during appointment-based vaccine visits increases the types of vaccines administered and to determine the number of patients willing to receive more than one recommended vaccine during an appointment-based vaccine visit.

Methods: This prospective, experimental study will be conducted at a single pharmacy within a large community pharmacy chain between September 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. At this pharmacy, study pharmacists will perform a comprehensive vaccine review during appointment-based vaccine visits in an effort to increase the percentage of eligible vaccines administered in a community pharmacy setting. For the purposes of this study, a comprehensive vaccine review is defined as a comprehensive screening for all vaccines a person is eligible for by using the statewide IIS to gather vaccination histories. Vaccination histories and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations will then be used to determine vaccine eligibility. To ensure fidelity of the intervention, study pharmacists will be trained on how to use the statewide IIS, determine the number of vaccines a person is eligible to receive, develop the vaccine action plan, and provide an evidence-based quality vaccine recommendation. A handout detailing the vaccine recommendations will be provided to each patient during the vaccination appointment. In December 2023, the study pharmacists will conduct phone interviews with these patients to determine the percentage of eligible vaccines received between the initial appointment-based vaccine visit and the follow-up phone interview.

Results: Results are pending and will be reported at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in March 2024.

Conclusions: The results from this study will help determine if performing comprehensive vaccine reviews during vaccination appointments increases the number of adults who are up to date on vaccines recommended by the ACIP.
