Objectives: Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART) is becoming more prominent in the management and prevention of HIV. LA-ART treatments have the potential to improve adherence because of less frequent administration compared to conventional daily oral medications. Regularly administering cabotegravir and cabotegravir/rilpivirine bi-monthly or monthly, and lencapavir every six months can achieve sustained virologic suppression. The goal of this study is to identify the stakeholders' perspectives on the most suitable workflow and logistical support necessary for community pharmacies to facilitate LA-ART administration.

Methods: This qualitative study is enclosed in a convergent-parallel mixed-methods research that enrolled individuals with HIV, community pharmacists, and HIV clinic staff members from Northern California, Eastern Texas, Central Alabama, and Southern Florida. An electronic survey comprising eleven items was disseminated to collect fundamental characteristics such as age, employment, gender identity, etc. A semi-structured interview was conducted with participants subsequent to the baseline survey to explore their views and clinic dynamics pertaining to LA-ART administration in a community pharmacy. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) was used to structure a guide for the interview, and one question specifically asked for the participant descriptions of the “ideal workflow” for pharmacy-based administration of LA-ART. The interview data is transcribed, and Dedoose is used to analyze them using thematic content analysis and coded for all groups to achieve a better understanding of the desired aspects of community pharmacy administering LA-ART. Through the analysis, the objective is to code the trends that emerge from the interviews held by all stakeholders, which includes the workflow, barriers, and communication. Approval for the study was granted by the institutional review board of WCG™.
