Objectives: Medication adherence is critical for ensuring proper disease state management, prevention of complications and hospitalizations, and overall improvement of health outcomes and quality of life. Medication adherence packaging is a pharmacy-based intervention that aims to improve medication adherence by providing a convenient way for patients to easily access doses of multiple medications. A rural independent community pharmacy in Western New York began offering Dispill®, an adherence packaging service more than three years ago to improve patient care and customer satisfaction. In February 2023, the pharmacy implemented new adherence packaging technology, RapidPakRx™, which offers packaging in a contemporary design to enhance ease of use. The objective of this retrospective study is to determine the change in medication adherence amongst pharmacy patrons that began using the new adherence packaging program compared to the previous compliance packaging program. Additionally, data will be aggregated to determine characteristics of patients more likely to utilize adherence packaging programs in the pharmacy. The overall goal is to determine the benefits of medication adherence programs and improve accessibility of these programs for patients.

Methods: Data from 100 patients will be collected from Middleport Family Health Center Pharmacy in Middleport, NY. Patient data for the adherence packaging will be collected from an electronic database for all qualifying patients. By calculating the proportion of days covered (PDC), medication adherence can be assessed amongst patients that switched from using Dispill to RxSafe. Patients will serve as their own control and the T-test will be utilized to determine any significant changes between the PDC calculations. Statistical software will be used (SPSS) to complete data analysis. Patient characteristics will also be collected and aggregated, including patient demographics, number of prescriptions, class of medications dispensed, disease states, prescription frequency, and number of dietary supplements.
